Seems like Illustrator in Adobe CS3 breaks some rule that causes
dvips to get
confused and give the following message while processing graphics (in
this
example the file "test2.eps"):

/### /usr/texbin/dvips -R -Poutline  -o

Details:

System: Latest version of MacTeX (1/12/07) OS X 10.4.11. Macbook 2GHz.

Including graphics using:

\usepackage{graphicx}
.....

\includegraphics[width=\columnwidth]{figure.eps}

I have tried to do a study of what exactly causes the problem. It
seems to have
something to do with the handling of transparency. In legacy AI
formats where
transparency is discarded there seems to be no problem. In order to
get the
error, you need to have a file that includes some transparency, such
as a drop
shadow. I don't recall having this problem with illustrator 11
(CS1). Saving
legacy formats with transparency doesn't seem to help however.

The problem doesn't seem to be fatal, the file processes with the
error messages
and the output appears to be OK.

Has anybody else seen this problem?

cheers,

ben
