Oops! Now that you mention it, that's exactly what I did [redfaced!].  
I have a book on Cocoa and a book on Carbon, both based on Project  
Builder for Jaguar, and I haven't gotten around to working through  
them yet but very much plan on working through them, so I purposely  
didn't upgrade to XCode for Tiger (I skipped Panther entirely). I  
feel horrible I didn't think to include this small (huge!) detail in  
my original post. Terribly sorry about that.

 From "gcc --version": gcc (GCC) 3.1 20020420 (prerelease).

As mentioned in my original post, I installed teTeX using the i- 
Installer. If I use Fink to install mpm, will the Fink-installed mpm  
still install packages in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/, where  
teTex will look for the packages?
