[OS X TeX] latex from an xterm window cannot find a .sty file

Try if putting it into

   /sw/share/texmf-local/tex/interitemtext/interitemtext.sty

helps, i.e. place the "interimtext" directory inside the "tex" directory 
beside which it is sitting right now. AFAICT, texhash lists only the 
contents of the "tex" subdirectory of a given directory in which it 
places its "ls-R" database file.

After running texhash, you can look with

   kpsewhich interitemtext.sty

whether your tex system sees the file.
