Which leads to Morten's excellent {mathtools} package, with a lot of
neat things in it.

But also prompts my next question: is there a way to make
{multlined} from {mathtools} behave (e.g., in the example above) as
{multline}s would? In other words, convince {multlined} to take all
the h-space it can, up to the page margins and tags ?

(On one hand, the firstline-afterskip and lastline-preskip do not
swallow \hfill or such, on the other hand, using optional
[\linewidth] or [\linewidth-<something>] either bumps the tag to a
different line, or doesn't touch the margin.)
