If you consider buying a book:
There are lots of complaints in the newsgroups about the outdated dirty
hacks told in Kopkas book -- even though it might be a good introducting
IF you have a printout of L2TABUEN.pdf at hand to check the things you
find there.
The LaTeX companion is great, but be shure to get the /second/ edition.
You will find good recent info on LaTeX and lot's of points to start
with for the most important packages.
