Many thanks for your reply. Perhaps TeXShop's log file will clarify
the issue. I have selected Tex+GhostScript, because that combination
seems essential with van Zandt's Seminar package. The log file (either
from TeXShop or the command line, after "simpdftex latex --maxpfb")
begins like this:

### This is /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/simpdftex,
Version $Revision: 2.18 $
### /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/latex slides.tex
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)
entering extended mode
(./slides.tex
LaTeX2e <2005/12/01>

It ends like this:

Output written on slides.pdf (148 pages, 417295 bytes).
Transcript written on slides.log.
### /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/dvips -R
-Poutline -o /tmp/altpdflatex.11943-1164274808/slides.ps slides.dvi
This is dvips(k) 5.95b Copyright 2005 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/dvips: ! DVI file
can't be opened.
### FAILED to generate /tmp/altpdflatex.11943-1164274808/slides.ps ()

Also, the output is wrong. The slides themselves are OK, but they are
on giant pages and cannot be printed. It all worked with the previous
version. I don't actually want a DVI file, just correct output.
