This might be helpful:

(obtained by googling for "bibtex journal list abbreviations  
commands"). It talks about \apj in particular.

I am guessing this is just using the @STRING definition. I remember  
reading in the Companion I think about where to find journal lists,  
which are just bib files with a bunch of @STRING definitions for  
various journals. You then just have this bib file read before your  
bib file.
I would guess there are different ones for each discipline. I must  
admit I could not find any such files by a quick google search.
