[OS X TeX] [OT] Journal abbreviations in bibtex

In a bibtex entry I downloaded for a paper, the journal was given by  
the shorthand \apj (for Astrophysical Journal). This makes me wonder,  
is there somewhere some "standard" definition of shorthand names for  
journals, or is this something that the user is expected to define?
