[OS X TeX] fragmaster, dvips and pdflatex problem

Hi,

I'm trying to use the fragmaster Perl script
<http://www.tat.physik.uni-tuebingen.de/~vogel/fragmaster/> as a
workaround for the incompatiblity of psfrag and pdflatex. In doing so,
I appear to have run into a problem with my installation of dvips.

As described on its website, fragmaster uses latex and dvips to generate
a small PS file from an eps file, replacing any text with standard TeX
fonts using psfrag. The PS file is then turned into a PDF which can then
be easily included in a latex file built with pdflatex.

However, something seems to be wrong with my installation of dvips,
which comes from gwTeX (via i-Installer). The PDF generated is empty
because dvips cannot find the original PS file, despite the fact that it
is there:

sannr056:Desktop$ dvips -o fm.ps fm.dvi

-rw-r--r-- 1 mike mike 12611 25 Jun 02:27
/Users/mike/Desktop/fragmaster/parabel_fm.eps

I've tried the same command with the same files on a generic Debian
teTeX installation, and it works fine. The files can be downloaded from
the fragmaster website.

Does anyone have any idea why dvips is failing to find the file? I've
never used a latex-dvips tool chain on OS X, having long ago migrated to
pdflatex (hence the desire to use fragmaster), so don't know where to
start.

On an tangentially related subject, is psfrag the preferred way of
including TeX fonts and maths in Gnuplot-generated figures, or is it
unnecessarliy complex?

Thanks,
