Yes, an external editor can be used with iTeXMac2. You can find a read me file that describes how to set this up as folllows:

control click on the iTeXMac2 and select Show Package Contents
in Contents/PlugIns you will find a bundle named External Text Editor.iTM2
control click on this bundle and select Show Package Contents.

There you will find the read me file I mentioned above/
