Can you just put the new PPD file inside the same directory as the
older one, and then select it for the printer?

In Tiger:

- Open System Prefs > Print & Fax.

- Select the printer, then the Printer Setup button.

- This opens the Printer Info panel in Printer Setup Utility. In this
panel, select Printer Model in the first pull-down menu.

- In the second pull-down menu, you should see "Xerox Phaser 3500"
corresponding to the older PPD. Select instead Xerox at the bottom of
the menu and see whether "Xerox Phaser 3500 PS" (which is the name
declared in XRX_Phaser_3500.ppd) is present in the list that appears.
If so, select it, click on the "Apply Changes" button and try to
print. If you don't see the name in the list, go back to the second
pull-down menu and select "Other..." then locate the file
XRX_Phaser_3500.ppd you just installed (normally at /Library/Printers/
PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/XRX_Phaser_3500.ppd).

This may or may not solve your problem, I don't know.
