/usr is hidden, normally.

1: in finder: cmd-shift-G brings up the location dialog. Type /usr,  
and the folder will appear. Note the cmd-shift-G shortcurt works in  
open and save dialogs as well, and ~ is recognised as home, ~user as  
the home of 'user'.
2: The terminal will always work.
