A few years after the Mac came into being, my two-year college got a
singlw Mac into its "computer room" that I would occasionally use to
finish something I had started at home. One such day, a professor of
secreterial sciences, whom I had taken a typing course from, came in to
use one of the IBMs but asked me about the Mac although saying
immediately that the students had to learn how to use IBMs because this
was all there was out there.

So, I was showing here MacWrite pointing out that I had whole lines of
text on the screen when some guy from the computer department said
something to the effect that this was rubbish for "toys", what with
their mouse, unfit for serious machines but that he could make his IBM
do it too if we wanted. So, while I was giving my collegue the usual
tour on the "toy", the guy from CS furiously tinkered with his serious
machine until finally and triumphantly he called us over to show us how
he could … scroll horizontally on his 80-character machine to see a
whole line, not all at the same time to be sure, but a whole line
nevertheless. My colleague and I were able to keep a straight face but
he was utterly and completely convinced that he had "shown us".
