[OS X TeX] Entering specially formatted items in the index

Another one of my bizarre requests:

I want to enter the metric prefixes in the index but I am using a
special format for them that \index does not recognize as such:

    (1) \denom is defined in the preamble as follows

        \DeclareMathAlphabet{\denom}{OT1}{cmss}{sbc}{n}

    (2) Then, for instance, DEKA is formatted as follows

        $\denom{D\mathsmaller{EKA}}

    (3) but the following does not work

        \index{$\denom{D\mathsmaller{EKA}}$}

On page 874 of the Companion 2ed, there seems to be a relevant example,
with a format defined by a \newcommand, but I don't really understand it
and am unable to tweak it to my purpose.

Hopeful regards
