[OS X TeX] pdflatex fails...'kpathsea: Running mktexfmt pdflatex.fmt'

This tells us that pdfetex did not find pdflatex.fmt and then tries to
make one. Both pdfetex calls call the same version.

The file pdflatex.fmt was succesfully generated and installed in your
local texmf tree.

I always thought that a fatal format error tells you that the fmt file was
made with a different TeX version.

In any case I would check your /Documents/Oberlin/Courses/101/Syllabus
directory for texmf.cnf, fmtutil.cfg etc. files which could mess with what
TeX programs pick up. I would check which pdflatex is being run (which
pdflatex) and which pdflatex.fmt is being used (kpsewhich pdflatex.fmt). I
would check my environment (env) to see if this influences TeX.

Between the brackets () you find the commands to enter.
