If you're using numbered references, you want to ``clear'' for the 
largest / longest entry. So if your references run 1--9, you'd put a 
single digit in, 10--99 you'd put two, and if 100--999 you'd put in a 3 
digit number.

This is of course for monospacing numbers --- if you're using 
proportional figures you need to figure out which is the widest digit 
and use appropriate numbers of it, e.g., 8, 88, 888.
