[OS X TeX] Question: adjusting spacing in the enumerate environment

Claus,

The \csepb=0.5\medskip statement produces the error message:

! Illegal unit of measure (pt inserted).
<to be read again>
        \protect
1.79 \csepb=0.5\medskip

\csepb=2.5pt does compile correctly

At any rate, this doesn't seem to have any effect on the space above 
the first item.
