Thanks for the answer. It's nice to know Apple is aware of the issue, 
and willing to resolve it.

I've finally managed, I think, to make my .mac page functional again, 
so there <http://homepage.mac.com/bvoisin/FileSharing4.html> are now 
examples of what I was looking for, in the form of screenshots. Perhaps 
the problem I was looking at was too specific, ie printing a folder 
listing in which each file name was accompanied by the icon of the 
file, this file being actually a graphical (GIF) one and the icon a 
mere visualization of the file content. For this specific aim the print 
window thing of Mac OS 9 and before, coupled with the OS X ability to 
replace the standard file icon by the file content for a graphical 
file, would have been especially convenient.
