I worked for Apple for a time OS8-OS10.2 and the print window thing is
something that was discovered about the time of the OX X public beta ---
trust me it was not an intentional thing to not include it but rather a
limitation of the interface on top of unix. I am sure as soon as there is
a reasonable work around of the issue that caused it without breaking
anything it will definitely be included. I can guarantee you that every
third Mac user has noticed also and complained.

It was part of the same set of problems that included the file labeling
in the old OS where you could label files or folders by color. This
functionality too was "lost" till 10.2.8 I believe, by the fact that the
unix file and folder information made no reasonable place to include it.
(color information), and is again a function of putting a pretty GUI on top
of unix.

My method of printing a list of files that are in a folder is to use the
disk browser feature in BBEdit. Another work around is to print from the
terminal.
