According to this (a bit old) blog entry 
<http://web.nickshanks.com/blog/archive/000010.html>, the issue is 
indeed far from solved on OS X. See 
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/>. In particular the 
installation of Mathematica fonts 
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228804> and TeX fonts 
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161137> seems to only 
make things worse.
