Can it be that you don't believe what you see? With both of Aaron's 
examples I can produce output with some space between the characters 
and the end or start of a line. Why don't you try something more 
obvious:

	\pstree[nodesep=12pt]{\Tr{EI}}{\Tr{P} \pstree{\Tr{a}}{\Tr{S}}}
