The AFM files seem to be only relevant to dvipdfm(x) -- and to create 
TFM files from.

It does not matter where the TFM files are -- they have to be the same 
everywhere! You have good prints and any other user gets scrap output?

Fontinst, too, cares for kerning. Walter Schmidt's a specialist on this.
