[OS X TeX] Typesetting "April 9th, 2005" with proper kerning

you could try to add a kern

April 9\textsuperscript{th}\kern-0.3em,\kern0.2em 2005

(first remove some space to tuck the comma in, then add some air before 
2005.)

The alternative is of course to with ninth in full.
