Word doesn't have an algorithm for page proportion --- WYSIWYG, there's 
an interactive dialogue for setting such which defaults to 1" margins 
top/bottom and 1.25" left/right.

If you use the Wizards and templates they're mostly designed by Daniel 
Will-Harris and are okay except that anyone else who uses them will get 
the same results, and people aren't that great at picking an 
appropriate template for a given purpose, and there are only so many 
templates.

I'd suggest showing your colleagues LyX, or offering to install it for 
them when you need to do collaborative stuff.
