[OS X TeX] question about the list of figures

A friend of mine is finishing her thesis (on an iBook running Tiger
and TeXShop/teTeX, so this is at least slightly on topic :-)).

She uses \listoffigures to produce a list of figures, as normal. The
trouble is that some of the figures don't really have a meaningful
caption, just a figure number (produced with \caption{}).
In the list of figures, these appear as completely blank lines, with
just the page number at the end of the line. She would like these to
still appear, but provide a text such as "Figure n". Of course one
can *add* one such line with \addcontentsline but I can't figure out
how to avoid the blank line in the first place. Any suggestions?

TIA
