About two dozen IgorPro generated EPS images. All vector graphics. 
About 230 pages. Just a few standard fonts (Geneva, Symbol) in a few 
sizes. CM-Super for the rest of the document.

> images that are in pdf format, or let is loose on the final file.

Not bad: 7.6 MB after recompression.
Thanks for the hint at pdftk, this tool is really impressive.
