William,

I happened to take this same route some time ago, first starting with
Scientific Workplace. Be advised the SW uses special macros for certain
things (like graphics) that won't compile in a normal latex environment
(without some expert tweaking).

I graduated to Miktex and Winedt, which was a pretty easy transition.
Winedt has buttons for: tex, latex, pdftex, pdflatex, dvipdfm, gsview,
pstopdf, etc, and a wealth of other features. There is inverse search
with its dvi previewer that is similar to the inverse search available
in Texshop. Tell your friend that the way to install is as follows:

Install ghostscript:
ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/gs850/gs850w32.exe
Install gsview:
ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/ghostgum/gsv46w32.exe
Install acrobat reader:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Install Miktex: http://www.miktex.org/
Install Winedt: http://home.istar.ca/~winedt/work/winedt54.exe

That's it. Winedt is shareware that you can use for 30 days for free.
An educational license is $40, worth every penny, as Winedt is one of
the very best editors you can find for Tex and friends (for standard
windows users).

I graduated from there to a Miktex, Emacs, Auctex solution. I have
always been grateful for a wonderful page for this type of
installation: http://www.math.aau.dk/~dethlef/Tips/

I hope these links help your friend.
