Howdy,

Font and Format related items that are to be used by everyone one the  
system should be installed in the proper sub-directory of /usr/local/ 
teTeX/share/texmf.local/. Packages for personal use can still be  
installed in your personal tree, ~/Library/texmf/.

If you install anything in the texmf.local tree you must run

sudo texhash

so the system will know about the changes; this is NOT necessary for  
items in you personal tree. If it is fonts related you might have to  
add a .map via

sudo -H updmap-sys ...

etc.
