Howdy,

Rather than go into details, try looking at the titlesec and titletoc  
packages. The best discussion of their use is in the 2nd Edition of  
``The LaTeX Companion'' by Mittelbach, Goosens, et al, which is a  
big, fat, wonderful book with tons of in-depth information.

Another, somewhat thinner and less detailed but still wonderful book  
is the 4th Edition of ``Guide to LaTeX'' by Kopka and Daly.

I think BOTH should be in any serious LaTeX user's library.
