[OS X TeX] Change font size in mathmode

I have a horrid large matrix which I really want to go on one line in a
displayed equation. I put \small at the start of the equation, and this
did what I wanted but I got a warning that \small is invalid in
mathmode.

What is the proper way of forcing a smaller textsize in mathmode?

If you use \scriptstyle, you can't just put that round the whole array,
which is very tedious...

Thanks

Ralph
