Thanks for your help!  I am now using the following line:

;; TeXShop as a viewer
(setq TeX-view-style '(("." "open -a /Applications/TeXShop.app %d")))

and it works.  Is there any way I could leave the viewer window open,
modify the document, recompile and have the viewer update it on the
screen automatically?  I have tried setting "Automatic Preview Update"
in the Preferences, but it does not help.  I am using TeXShop 1.35b.
