Howdy,

It appears that T1 font encoding is being used for some reason. I'd add the
line

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}\usepackage{lmodern}\usepackage{textcomp}

to force it and use Latin Modern and expect it to work fine.

I'm not a user of the babel package so I don't know its internals very well.
