Actually, the fundamental problem is that the mapping from TeX markup
to page is not invertible. So, there is no general way of going from
digital ink on the page back to the TeX markup that created it, or of
designating a syntactically complete markup expression by
point-and-click means. One may hack some heuristic rules, but they will
quickly collapse under the strain.
