i use TeXShop as a previewer with emacs under x11. when TeXShop
auto-updates the window, it comes to the foreground, but the emacs
window stays active. very useful if you say just want to hit C-c C-c
again to get your references right etc.

in addition, if another application is in front of TeXShop it does not
foreground the window. so if i want to see TeXShop, but not have it
come to the foreground i use a little window of another application,
usually the small itunes window, and have it overlap with TeXShop in a
place where it doesn't bother me. then TeXShop stays in the background.

maybe that works for you.

cheers,
jan
