 From William Adams, 10 March 2004; this link has some info on the 
prepress question: <http://www.pdfzone.com/news/705-PDFzone_news.html>. 
  It may not be PDF/X compliant without some additional work.

PStill (non-free) will convert RGB images to CMYK and use PDF/X, if 
that is what the printer desires, but I think you can also do this with 
ColorSync.
