Yep, it looks like it's a FileMaker database and it's difficult to build some
like reference database in FileMaker (that works in a nice way that is) ...
I've tried.

As for bibtex reference managers I would rank them something like

+   BibGene (OS 9 only)

+   BibDesk/JabRef


One other application that I like but lacks a bit when it comes to BibTeX is
Bookends.
