Tore---

A useful supplement to the very generous responses given here is the
book TeX Unbound, by Alan Honig (OUP, 1998)---an excellent book that
covers fonts *very* thoroughly and that I resorted to to solve my own
unanswered questions.

And Mac OS version fonts contain their data in their POST resouce.
Before you use t1utils, you have to covert the fonts to MacBinary or
something like that. Very very long ago, we could use UnAdobe which
could extract font data from POST resources and convert them PFA/PFB
formats. But the program can not run current version of Mac OS
because the program runs only 24 bit addressing mode (you need IIci or
same generation Macs). I ported parts of t1utils for Mac OS 8-9 in
order to convert Mac fonts. Im' sorry that their documents were
written in Japanese (sorry) but I think that the usage is no so
difficult. Launch the apprication and then simply choose the target
fonts. If you want to try them, please get following URL.

ftp://macptex.appi.keio.ac.jp/pub/mac/tools
extpostsit.hqx Exract POST resource and covert it PFA.
t1utils.sit.hqx t1asm, t1disasm, t1ascii and t1binary.

Subject: xdvi won't stop generating fonts

This may not be an xdvi problem, but I don't know. I can't get xdvi to
stop regenerating pk files. It calls mktexpk for every font every time I
view a file. If the pk file already exists it moves onto the next font,
but the process is still very slow, since it takes a while for mktexpk
to report that the file exists.

I have followed the instructions for xdvi you get from fink describe
xdvi and added the specified lines to the file texmf.cnf. After that I
restarted. But I still have the same problem.

I am using
xdvi-22.51-2
system-tetex-20010808-5

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the very same problem. If you do not have embedded postscript
(but I have many!), you can use the carbon MacDviX from Tom Kiffe,
which shares the same pk files with xdvi.

I often use the MacOS X printdialog to save pdf-files if an
Application can´t do so by itself. But the graphic I want to have is
'included' in the pagesize you choose to print e.g. A4.

My way to use only the real graphic in pdflatex is

a) go to terminal and look for the Bounding Box with gs -dNOPAUSE
-dBATCH -sDEVICE=bbox myfile.pdf

b) copy the bounding box values to the viewport flag of
\includegraphics (graphicx package)

So in the .tex file it looks like this:
\includegraphics[viewport=102 324 470 779]{myfile.pdf}
but this is not what I really want because to use myfile.pdf I always
have to know the corresponding bounding box data.

My question:
Is there a way/App to crop a pdf-file to the bounding box? Perhaps
ghostscript (but how)?
I tried pdf2ps then pstoepsi then epstopdf: the cropping was OK but
all fonts are bitmapped now :-(

any suggestions?

cheers, Jan

The answer in at least one of the problems that has occurred is that
there used to be a file called nehyph2.tex, containing alternative
hyphenation patterns for Dutch. Older language.dat files used this
hyphenation patterns for Dutch.

For legal reasons, Thomas Esser has removed nehpyh2.tex from teTeX. The
new language.dat file reflects this change.

But older installations may still have a copy of language.dat in
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local or ~/Library/texmf which is found
first and which contains the ferenece to nehyph2.tex. This makes format
generation fail and that means that you get the newer binaries with
formats created by the older binaries (the 'stymied' situation).

Here are the commands from the command line to remedy the situation:

	sudo rm -f
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/generic/config/language.dat

	sudo rm -f /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/*.*fmt

	sudo rm -f /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/*.log

	sudo texconfig init

Mail.app wraps some of these around, maybe, but they all should be
entered on one line.

language.dat (which sets the hyphenation patterns available) and
fmtutil.cnf (which sets the formats available) will change their format
at my request to make automated parsing easier.

My upcoming new distribution will forcefully remove existing
language.dat end fmtutil.cnf files because the format will change. This
will solve the problems with outdated files, but it will imply that
people having adapted those will have to redo the adaptation (not:
restore the old versions!)

Set up a PostScript printer with a .ppd which allows custom page
sizes---not sure if Mac OS X has a UI for creating them yet or no, but
if not, you could just hand-edit the .ppd to have the desired sizes.

Or, use a graphics program like FreeHand which automagically will create
correct custom page sizes.

Alternately, the full version of Adobe Acrobat is able to crop .pdfs
visually / interactively, as are a number of the .pdf viewing programs
for NeXT/OPENstep (but none of them got ported 'cause Adobe Acrobat
Reader is free)

Don't know if it helps but
iTeXMac creator code is iTMx, all files saved by iTeXMac have type TEXT
and no creator :???? with
unchanged other attributes.
Is iTeXMac listed in the list of applications in the information panel
of a .tex file? If it is the case, you might have left some iTeXMac file
somewhere or LS is buggy.

Hi Jermone,

I did a search with Sherlock, and it's saying there are no files with
the iTMx creator code on my system. Also, iTM does not show up in the
list of possible apps in the get info.

What's so incredibly strange is that the behavior continues even if I
delete the LS files, and even if I create a new user!!

I talked to someone who suggested deleting everything relating to TS or
iTM, and then reinstalling TS...

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I normally use OzTeX to view dvi
files. But the mathematical program pari-gp calls xdvi to view help
files, so I wanted to figure out how to make it go faster.

If you read my post again, notice that I am talking strictly about the
situation where TeXShop is configured for external editor. This means that
the source is not going to be shown in TeXShop at all --- the source is
typically already open in your favourite editor. What we want is really to
have it tex'ed...

A file that worked last summer with the then current TeXShop and teTeX
distribution now seems to be broken (I'm using TeXShop 1.17 and teTeX
installer version 2002-01-24-21-04-29). The problem is inlcuding an eps
graphics file.

    \usepackage[dvips]{graphicx}

in combination with

    \begin{figure}[h!]
        \centering
        \includegraphics[scale=0.5]{SommerKlausur_Spule.eps}
        \caption{Drei Spulenkonfigurationen}
        \label{fig:}
    \end{figure}

now compiles properly but just gives a blank where the picture should be.
Any idea what's wrong?

I rather agree with Paulo, softwares which take initiatives may be
appealing at first look, or when you only use them once in a while, but
tend to be a pain for everyday use.

That's one of the reasons I can't stand Word: it's always willing to
take initiatives, like selecting a whole word and the space after it
while I just want to select a few letters, or transforming into a list a
paragraph that starts with an hyphen and format this list in some
predefined way, etc. Most of the time I spend using Word (I sometimes
have to) is spent finding which preference controls this or that
initiative, and disactivating it.

Generally when I use a software I expect it to do exactly what I
explicitly ask it to do, no more, no less. (Assuming that I ask well,
which is another story.)

Sorry if that sounds aggressive, the original suggestion just struck a
nerve in me.
