[OS X TeX] saving pdf 4 to a page

With TeXShop there are options under print that let you
save as pdf 4 to a page. But it doesn't seem to work for me.
Ditto if I use Acrobat Reader or BBEdit.

I recall there being options under Ghostscript to do this kind of thing.

Does anyone know why this doesn't work as it seems it should or
how to do it. I don't mind using the command line.
