Ross,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question!

However, it was your simple mention of the "special characters" 
(below) that  provided the answer (the most simple, of course):

My desire was to include the EPS filenames of placed graphics in 
their respective captions (in order to convey this info to my 
coworker).

So, yes, using "texttt{}" with the escape macros will work just fine.
