[Mac OS X TeX] Excalibur and TeXShop '.tex' files

I'm baffled.  TeXShop '.tex' files are just plain text, aren't 
they?  So why won't Excalibur 4 (running under OS X, not 
classic) open them to spell check?  If I drag them onto the 
Excalibur icon, Excalibur launches, but the files don't open, 
and I can't open them from the "open" menu item, either (they 
are grayed out in the open dialog).  What gives?
