Check in System Preferences, the Spelling preference pane, to make sure TeX
is checked.

It's checked here and it is still doing this. The behavior on my machine
seems to agree with the above assessment.

I just discovered that, on my installation, even though cocoAspell
incorrectly flags TeX commands as misspelled by underlining them (since
I have the "Check spelling as you type" option checked), it does not
find them when I run it as a spell checker using the "Spelling ..." or
"Check Spelling" options. So maybe that's the difference between those
of us who are saying it works and those who are saying it doesn't.

This is exactly my experience---with one exception: running "Spelling
 "
over a document caused it to flag \documentclass but no other latex
commands and certainly not \emph, of which there were plenty. BTW at the
time of running this over this old document, 'Check spelling as you
type" was checked, but of course there was no new typing for it to work
on. But this means that the program has two ways of working, and the
filter only works on one of them.

They're ignored for me (along with \documentclass, etc).

Perhaps you forgot to check the TeX filter in the cocoaAspell preferences?

The behaviour you are seeing is compatible with that option being
unchecked.

[Personally, I had trouble with cocoaAspell until I remembered to include
it among the login items in the Login PreferencePane. After that, it has
worked flawlessly.]

OK I seem to get correct TeX filtering if I have

(1) TeX (and only TeX) set in the SystemPreference

(2) Open to a new document and set the spelling under
Edit > Spelling to English (british) Aspell

(3) Select the whole doc and do Check Spelling

I am finding that TeXShop loses the English (british) Aspell
setting in Edit > Setting when I quit and launch again. It
goes back to English (Apple). I
suspect this was part of my earlier problems.

FileMaker is nice for certain things but it's also kind of restricted. (I
have one database that manage users in a Linux/Windows/Mac lab, I use it
daily and it works fine here but for other things ... well, it doesn't work).

I think the Eps that omnigraffle creates don't work with psfrag either.
It would like to be wrong about this, because omnigraffle semms to me a
nice program.

In my experience psfrag only works reliably with one-letter tags.
Illustrator, for example, separates each letter of a tag in the EPS
output it produces, in which case psfrag cannot do its magic.

In any case, with PDF gradually replacing EPS format, I've given up on
psfrag.

There are a couple of good reasons to do this:

- Ease of installation: If you have Fink installed, you just say
"fink install tetex-macosx" or "fink install bundle-tetex",
and it takes care of all the rest.
No need to know the latest URL of Gerben's packages.
And you can watch what it is doing while it compiles the binaries.
- Stability: If there are any conflicts with the rest of the Fink
packages,
you can be pretty sure the maintainer of the Fink tetex packages will
  resolve them quickly.

BTW, you don't install Fink's tetex instead of Gerben's. Fink tetex *is*
Gerben's teTeX, just not the very latest version. It gets its sources
from the CTAN tetex directory and applies Gerben's patches. And it has a
standard texmf tree layout, just not rooted at /usr/local, but at /sw.
This shouldn't be a problem for the GUI applications. It isn't for
iTeXMac, in any case, which works quite well here with Fink tetex.

Hi Martin

Thanks for that. I was thinking of the package called tetex-base which
I thought that was a more standard tetex install and not Gerben's
tetex unless you installed tetex-macosx over the top or something?

To be honest I am not sure of the various choices here so I would
be greatful if anyone could clarify them.

I guess I should just email Dave Morrison !

Thanks - Michael

Subject: Problem with TeXShop 1.15
From: "Yves Gaudemer" <gaudemer at ipgp.jussieu.fr>
Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 15:21:55 +0100

Hello,

Until a few days ago, I have been using TeXShop and was perfectly happy with
it. I was delighted when the LaTeX palette was provided (I almost stopped
missing Alpha + OzTeX...).

I downloaded TeXShop 1.15 and ran into trouble immediately : when I compile
a text that includes pdf figures with the Pdftex option (in the Composer
menu) and with the new LaTeX template, I get an error message saying :

LaTeX Error : Cannot determine size of graphic in australie.pdf (no
BoundingBox)

Australie.pdf was generated by GMT as a PS figure then saved as pdf by
Illustrator.

The text compiled normally with all previous versions of TeXShop. Nothing
has changed in my configuration (same OS, same teTeX distribution).

Did someone run into the same problem ?

Thank you for your help,

Yves

Another possible reason for using tetex with Fink is that you can
use xdvi and other tools under XDarwin. This provides one solution to
the "All my figures are in eps format, not pdf" problem; there are other
solutions, of course.

As my patches have been integrated now in TeX Live (and teTeX) if
necessary, the patches are no longer maintained and are increasingly out
of date. The patches are against a teTeX beta from December 2000 and a
pdfTeX beta release from August 2001.

So long as you use TeX+dvips+ghostscript, that is no big deal. But if
you use pdfTeX, it pays to be recent if you want to produce good PDF as
PDF has been updated and fixed a lot over the last year.
