I don't know. I just found a message to this effect somewhere on the net.

You have to put the files in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp.
In fact I have used the make/make install from the distribution and it
puts it in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex.
/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp should contain subdirs.el for this to work
out of the box. I don't know if porkrinds distribution has it. I did the
compilation myself (and also made an installer package out of it), but if I
remember correctly I had to copy the subdirs.el file myself.

Then you will have to customize tex-site.el.
