?: METAFONT, teTeX, OS X

I recently installed teTeX on my TiBook, and both
latex->.dvi->.ps and pdflatex seem to be working (Thanks!).
I access them directly from Xfree86/WindowMaker rather than
>from a front-end.

I'm a METAFONT beginner, trying to design a completely new
exotic font. When I launch 'mf' on my files, in proof mode, I get as
far as seeing proofs, but I also get the message:

<<<<
Window support for X was not compiled into this binary. There
may be a binary called 'mfw' on your system which does contain
X Window support.
 >>>>>

Well, teTeX does has a 'mfw', but when I run it, I get the same
message. The message also tells me that I might need to
recompile METAFONT, specifying --with-x as an option
to the configure script.

Do I need to recompile METAFONT, first doing
configure --with-x

????

If so, where are the METAFONT sources?

Thanks,

Ken
