Dear Paul,

If you change the keyboard to English, then the keymapping is the same
as an English keyboard, but the characters on the keys are of course
japanese. If you mean you want to keep the Japanese mapping, then I
don't know. The little flag at the RH end of the menu tells you what
keyboard you're using.
The backslash (\) is the right hand key of the asdfg row, next to return
(this on a B/W G3 Japanese keyboard) and then forward slash (/) is just
above the RH option key.

I was having trouble getting ps files to appear properly in TeX Shop.
What is the correct include command for a PRB template?

James

P.S. Have you tried Xwindows yet? I am checking the Web until it gets to
a sufficiently easy procedure to install.

I'll see if I can get a .pdf made of the InstantTeX manual and will post
that to my site describing the NeXT UI and NeXT applications. (Not much
of a site yet, describe the font panel and TouchType.app,
http://members.aol.com/willadams/gnustep should be the URL, but working
on it when I can---getting up a site on what fonts are bundled with what
software has become somewhat more pressing with the release of Mac OS X,
hoping to include suggestions/guidelines for use...)

(My apologies for two e-mails on the same subject)

TeXView.app was a NeXT Developer Example, if memory serves.... Written
by the same guy who does DVIPS, it basically did DVI -> PS on-the-fly
with special hacks to enable things like faxing (which for some reason
was hard to accomplish) and to transparently switch font resolutions
depending upon magnification or output device. As the readme implies, it
was tightly integrated into the NeXT UI (an integration which would be
desirable for TeXShop...) and _very_ dependent upon Display PostScript.

And as penance (or is this gloating....)

Hey! you'll never guess what I got in the mail today....

Here's a hint, keep an eye on:
http://sunburn.stanford.edu/~knuth/dt.html

for a correction of ``monotype'' to ``Monotype'' as well as a new
footnote mention about how German hyphenation is possible with TeX82....

Is there an easy way to add files (i.e. -.sty or -.bst ) to the texmf
tree?
Like as user specific folder I can easy write to (no root needed) and
which is searched by the different apps (latex, bibtex and so on).
If I add files to the existing tree (as root, because of the write
permission) the apps sometimes will not find them.

If you are using TeXShop here are the instructions Richard Koch
sent me. Basically you set up another texmf tree in your
own user area and you have to tell teTeX to look in there. The step
below where you edit the texmf.cnf file I did in vi -- thats easier
than moving the file in and out IF you are happy to edit in a UNIX
editor like vi.

Michael

------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------

It is possible to store additional style
files, fonts, etc., in teTeX itself. But teTeX is owned by root and lives
in /usr/local/teTeX, which isn't visible except through the terminal.
Moreover, it is nice to keep this tetex structure pure so it can easily
be upgraded when later versions are introduced.

If you are just trying to load a macro, you can put it in the same
directory as your source, or include it with a full path name. But
for style files, or fonts, or any of the other kinds of tex file,
the best way is to construct a mirror image of the tetex
directory structure inside your Library folder and store your
personal files there.

---------------------

This requires one mildly tricky change in tetex, but it only has
to be done once. In terminal, type the following commands

	cd     /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c

	cp    texmf.cnf    ~

The result will be a file named "texmf.cnf" inside your home
directory. Open this file with TextEdit. Roughly 70 lines down,
you will come to the following text:

% Now, list all the texmf trees. If you have multiple trees you can
% use shell brace notation, like this:
%   TEXMF = {$HOMETEXMF,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFMAIN}
% The braces are necessary. If you set VARTEXMF, you also have to
%   - list $VARTEXMF in the TEXMF definition;
% - make sure that $VARTEXMF precedes $TEXMFMAIN in the TEXMF definition.
TEXMF =!!$TEXMFMAIN

Change the last line to read

TEXMF = {~/Library/texmf,!!$TEXMFMAIN}

Then save this file.

Now you want to move this file into the teTeX spot. To do so, type the
following commands, one after another

	cd
	sudo tcsh
	cd   /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c
          mv   texmf.cnf    texmf_old.cnf
          cp    /Users/koch/texmf.cnf    texmf.cnf

where you must replace "koch" by your own user name.

--------------------

Now that this is done, tetex will also search for files inside your Library
folder. But the files must be in appropriate directories. teTeX uses a
directory structure invented by the tex working group. I'll just give one
example. Suppose you want to add an extra style file named mine.sty
to the style files used by Latex. Looking inside tetex, we find that a
natural spot for this file would be

	/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex/latex/misc

So Inside our Library folder, we make a series of subdirectories
as follows:

	Library --> texmf --> tex --> latex -->  misc

and store "mine.sty" inside this misc directory.

Thanks for your answer.

Subject: Anyone using Omnigraffle and TeXShop?
From: "Fraser Speirs" <speirsfr at dcs.gla.ac.uk>
Date: Tue,  8 May 2001 15:29:17 +0100

Hi,

I'm using OmniGraffle to export as PDF a diagram that I need. I then use the
following in TeXShop to import it:

\vspace{.2in}
\begin{figure}
    \centering
    \includegraphics[width=5in]{motivation/IndustryStructure}
    \caption{Structure of the UK Rail Industry. (Adapted from Strategic Rail
Authority web site www.sra.gov.uk)}
    \label{fig:1}
\end{figure}
\vspace{.2in}

the problem is that the PDF gets cut off a little at the left and bottom when
it's typeset. The PDF appears OK in Preview.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Well, I don't know about Omnigraffle, but I ran into (apparently) the same
problem with pdf files created from Adobe Illustrator (namely, pdf image cut off
at the left and bottom when it's typeset). In my case, I was able to "fix"
things by eliminating all of the page borders (extra white space) in Illustrator
before I saved as pdf.

A question and a comment.

How do you eliminate the extra white space in Illustrator since I
found that I was running into a similar problem. In my case, I found
that I was getting what appeared to be the entire page out of
Illustrator. I found that I was able to fix this problem by
Distilling the .eps file out of Illustrator using Acrobat. Of course
then, some gradients don't show up. Arg!

Yes, but you can't include .eps files in TeXShop. Unless, of course,
I am missing something here, which is entirely possible. :-)

This was never a problem for me with eps files either.

To "resize" the image in Illustrator, I did a "select all" to get the image size
(height and width) from the floating info window. Then I set those numbers into
file/document_setup. This is a kludge (but it works) and I'd be interested to
have someone explain a better approach.

I think you're right. It seems like a bug in either Omni's or Mac OS X's PDF
generation. I tried a bunch of things like sacling the page to fit and removing
any extraneous whitespace, but nothing really worked. I could get it down to
cutoof only on the right hand side, but never perfect.

I worked around it by exporting from Omnigraffle as a JPEG and using photoshop
to convert from JPEG to PDF.

Guess I'll take it up with Omni.

From: "Martin Stokhof" <stokhof at hum.uva.nl>

Hi,

When I run BibTeX from TeXShop I invariably get the error message:
"Sorry--- you've exceeded BibTeX's buffer size 5000.

This occurs with jobs (files, style files, data files) that run without
a glitch under OS 9.1.
I've cut down the number of references in the source file to just a few
(two or three) and used a very small .bib file, but I still get the same
error.

Any hint of help would be much appreciated.

I'm having the same trouble. According to a local expert, the trouble
is the difference between LF (unix) and CR (Mac). Bibtex expects
ASCII input which is limited to 1052 (?) characters per line. If you
have a mac file, everything appears on the same line to unix.

I haven't experimented enough to be sure he is right.

I'm also on the pdftex mailing list,
<mailto:pdftex-request at tug.org?subject=subscribe> from whence I heard
about epstopdf.sty, which allows for eps->pdf generation on the fly.
I haven't gotten it to work, yet.

<http://www.ctan.org/getfile/?filename=macros/latex/contrib/supported/oberdiek/epstopdf.sty>

% Function: This packages adds support of handling eps images
%            to package graphic{s,x} with option `pdftex'.
% If an eps image is detected, epstopdf is automatically
% called to convert it to pdf format.
%
% Required:  * The program `epstopdf'.
% * The feature `\write18' has to be enabled to get
% the conversion via the program epstopdf work:
%              * command line option: -shell-escape
%                example: pdflatex -shell-escape test.tex
%              * configuraton file `texmf.cnf': shell_escape = 1
%
% Use: The package is loaded after graphic{s,x}, eg:
%              \usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}
%              \usepackage{epstopdf}
% Images with extension `.eps' are now detected
%            and supported:
%            * Implicitly: \includegraphics{bild}
% If `bild.eps' can only be found,
% then it is converted to the file `bild.pdf',
% that will be used by pdfTeX.
% On the next ocurrences or on the next pdfTeX run,
% the pdf file is already available, so the
%              conversion step is skipped.
%            * Explicitly: \includegraphics{bild.eps}
% Each time the conversion program is called.

Of course, I also had to install ghostscript (!) to get the epstopdf
script, which wasn't exactly a walk in the park for a novice user of
Unix like myself. PSUtils was also worth installing, by the way
<http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/ajcd/psutils/index.html>.

I believe you are correct. If you have BBEdit, you can open the file
in BBEdit and save it as "UNIX" instead of "Macintosh" for line

If it's Unix line endings which are the problem, there're lots of solutions.

There's a ``CRLF'' utility one can d/l from most sites for Mac OS

Or, one can just use the shell....

(from comp.linux.powerpc or some such)

Use tr. Example:Mac line breaks -> UNIX line breaks:
  cat foobar.txt | tr '\r' '\n' > foobar2.txt
UNIX line breaks -> Mac line breaks:
  cat foobar.txt | tr '\n' '\r' > foobar2.txt

To convert the file, use BBEdit or the following command in Terminal:

tr '\r' '\n' < "input file" > "output file"

(those files must not be the same)

i can confirm this;
the same happens for EPS files coming from OS9, but then its LaTeX that
gets the buffer size exceeded.

you can change the encoding using BBedit or, if you already moved
completely to TeXShop, use the script that Richard Koch provides on his
homepage:
http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/fixm.tar.gz

usage:  fixm <oldfile> <newfile>
(where <oldfile> and <newfile> should be distinct, or you will get a
bunch of empty files, like i did when i first tried it ;-)

what i usually do (and it works quite well) is to save in illustrator as
EPS and use the distiller to convert it to PDF. this means of course
that i have to make changes in the original EPS file instead of the PDF.

The problem is in my opinion that either pdflatex or the apple pdf
viewer class or illustrator/omnigraffle does something wrong with the
bouding box of the PDF file; at least there obviously is some kind of
inconsistency between the understanding of the bounding box in these
three apps.

Thanks. Yes, he is right. I went back to 9.1 and opened both the .bib
file and the particular .bst file I was using (which wasn't one of the
.bst files in the standard distribution) in BBEdit and saved them with
the option "Unix line breaks". Back to OS X and TeXShop and everything
runs fine.

Which brings me to the following: I seem to remember that there is a
Unix script "mac2unix" that you can run in the command line to fix this
problem of different ways of coding the line breaks. However it seems to
be missing in OS X. Can anyone confirm its existence or even better,
tell me where I can find it?

There have been several posts today about including eps files in pdftex. Pdftex can include tiff, jpg and pdf images directly. If you have an eps file you must
convert it to pdf using the epstopdf program. This program modifies the
original eps file and then calls ps2pdf to generate a pdf file. Ps2pdf calls
ghostscript, so you must have it installed on your computer. The epstopdf
script will not handle eps files with the bounding box info at the end, like
eps files from Mathematica.

My epstopdf, combined with MacGhostview (which includes macps2pdf), handles all eps files, even those created with Mathematica.

I've been using OmniGraffle since b1 and I sent a bug report to Omni
because I've had the same problem. It's been a while, but I think the
reply said that it is an Apple bug. Anyway, my solution is to put a
rectangle at the lower left corner of the image and then make it
invisible by setting the border color to white. Obviously, the rectangle
should "overlap" your image on the left and bottom side. You may need to
try a little to figure out the size, but this works very well.

From: "Tom Kiffe" <tom at kiffe.com>

I haven't looked at other scripts but here are two simple shell scripts I use for converting between Mac and Unix linebreaks.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
#
# mac2unix.sh
# convert Mac linebreaks to Unix linebreaks
foreach f ($argv[*])
	mv $f $f.mac
	cat $f.mac | tr "\r" "\n" > $f
end
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
If you run

mac2unix.sh foo.tex

the script will save foo.tex as foo.tex.mac and then convert linebreaks.
When you are finished fo.tex will have Unix file breaks. If you type

mac2unix.sh *

the script will convert all the files in the current directory.

For the reverse we have
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
#
# unix2mac.sh
# convert Unix linebreaks to Mac linebreaks
foreach f ($argv[*])
	mv $f $f.unix
	cat $f.unix | tr "\n" "\r" > $f
end
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Save each of these snippets in a separate file (with Unix linebreaks,
a Catch22 situation). In the Terminal type

chmod 744 unix2mac.sh
chmod 744 mac2unix.sh

to make them executable and move them to your local bin. Type "rehash" and you can use them from the Terminal anywhere on your system.

Apple, in its infinite wisdom, decided a long time ago to make \r the
linebreak character on a Mac. Unix uses \n and Windows uses both. Since we
now have a hybrid system of Mac and Unix this is going to present numerous
little problems. Some of the TeX programs were designed to read both Mac
and Unix linebreaks. Bibtex and dvips, as generally distributed, do not.
Fortunately ghostscript does. If you begin to see unexpected behavior when
running a Unix program, linebreaks is one of the first things you should check.

I have been very careful with CMacTeX to make sure that it will handle both
Mac and Unix linebreaks. If anyone encounters this problem with one of my
programs, let me know so I can correct it.

Subject: Re: [Mac OS X TeX] Updated CMacTeX
From: "Tom Kiffe" <tom at kiffe.com>
Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 18:20:28 -0500

I posted an updated cmactex_osx.sit this noon. All that changed is setup.
It now allows you to have three default texmf trees. The first one searched
is called texmflocal and it must contain the files specific to CMacTeX. The
second is tetexlocal, your local teTeX texmf tree. The last is texmf itself.
All three of these can be symlinks but they must reside in the same folder
as the binaries folder. You can override this default behavior by recording
your search paths in a file and having setup read this file to set search
paths. Read the default_osx.paths file carefully to see just how to do this.
CMacTeX does not read texmf.cnf to get search paths.

If you downloaded cmactex_osx.sit before this noon (U.S. Central Daylight Time)
you only have to download setup.sit. The url is
http://www.kiffe.com/tex/programs/setup.sit.bin.

Tom

A simple question: how do you make all the TeX Type1 Postscript fonts that
come with CMacTeX 3.7 under Mac OS 9 available to ps2pdf, and presumably
ghostscript as well? If I use Acrobat 4.0 under Mac OS 9, which is aware of
all the TeX Type 1 postscript fonts, as the ps2pdf processor, called by
epstopdf, it appears to make the bounding boxes of Illustrator EPS files a
little smaller than they should be, when converting to PDF? Also the only
way epstopdf appears to work is by dropping the .eps file on the
application, the menu and dialog box method appears to go through the
correct motions, but never actually calls whatever ps2pdf converter is
selected. Basically I just want to be able to correctly convert Illustrator
EPS files containing references or even embedded subsets of TeX Type 1
Postscript fonts into correctly structured PDF files having the correct
bounding box with the necessary subsets of TeX Type1 fonts embedded with the
correct encoding:-)

Thanks

Keith
