I just remembered how to do it in plain:

% there's some pdftex primitive to do \loadmapfile[lucida.map]
% if it's not in global map already
\font\a=hlhb8t at 100pt\a\char131\char146\char154\char163\char178\char186
\bye

You may put any font instead of hlhb8t that ends with 8t (from Lucida's vfs).
