[lucida] Questions on Lucida on Mac OS X

I have just obtained the Lucida complete font set from TUG and am
installing it
on a machine running Mac OS X 10.4.7 with the TeX distribution from the
i-Installer of Gerben Wierda updated yesterday --- the versions of
software are:
pdfeTeX 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)
kpathsea version 3.5.5
This is the full GW distribution based on TeXLive 2005 & teTeX 3 (x86/
ppc)

I have unpacked the lucida-complete.zip file into (Kpathsea variable)
$HOMETEXMF
which in my account, molyneux, is
/Users/molyneux/Library/texmf

From the texmf.cnf file(s) I have assumed that I do not need to run
mktexlsr to
create an ls-R file in $HOMETEXMF (and from the TeX update of
yesterday $TEXMFDBS
would indicate that kpsewhich would not look for an ls-R file there)

I read the bit in the readme.lucida file about ``Installing the font map
files'' and foolishly thought that if kpsewhich could find lucida.map
then all
would be well. A run of a minimal LaTeX file confirmed that the fonts
were not
being found --- here is a snippet from the console messages (I am
using TeXShop
version 2.08 about to upgrade to 2.09)

   (/Users/molyneux/Library/texmf/tex/latex/lucidabr/lmrhlcm.fd) [1{/
usr/local/teT
   eX/share/texmf.local/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map}]
   (./lucidaEGmin20060727.aux)kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --
bdpi 600 --mag 1+70/600 --dpi 670 hlhr8r
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for hlhr8r.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
    )
   Warning: /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/
pdflatex (file hlhr8
   r): Font hlhr8r at 670 not found

A look at some of the messsages on the lucida July mailing list it
looks as if
user molyneux should execute the following in the Terminal

   sudo updmap-sys --enable Map=lucida.map

Is the above the correct thing to do ? Before my i-Installer upgrade
of yesterday
I had no updmap-sys command only updmap --- the man entry doesn't say
much about
the difference --- would it matter which you used.

Further Queries
===============

Sorry to be a bit long but a couple of other points may be common to
other people:

(1) I unpacked the .zip file into $HOMETEXMF to avoid ownership and
permissions
issues and I could use a graphical unzip program (MacZipit v2.2.2
remembering to
set it to unzip to existin folders, not the default; Stuffit Expander
10.0.2
crashed part way through unbundling sadly). If I had wanted to
unbundle in
$TEXMFLOCAL would the following work ?

   unzip -d /path/to/TEXMFLOCAL /path/to/lucida-complete.zip

(2) I would like to get a table of the glyphs in each font so I could
(say)
use \symbol{number} to access characters I cannot get any other
(easy) way.
Is nfssfont.tex the right tool to use for this ? I ask since when I
use this on
the font ptmr8c some of the glyphs appear as black squares are there
are some
error messages.

(3) On my Mac (and I assume PC too) there are fonts called Lucida
Grande and Bold
which contain characters which seem not to be in The Comprehensive
LaTeX Symbol
List --- for example Erase to the Right Unicode symbol 232B --- are
these fonts likely to be available to TeX users ?
