    Can I just purchase lucida BR narrow

I don't believe this variant existed back when the original Lucida
distribution for TeX was created by Y&Y et al.  We didn't attempt to add
any newer Lucida fonts; that would have complicated the process even
more.  So the Lucida fonts that we (and pctex) distribute are precisely
what Y&Y had in their main distribution.

Perhaps someday we will add other fonts.

     (what variants of the family would I need?) 

Whatever you use, probably roman/italic/bold at least.  I'm not sure you
can always buy them piecemeal anyway?

Also, if you need math, I imagine you'd have to scale the existing math
fonts.  I'm sure that a font set from adobe or wherever will not come
with tex math support.

Michael has already answered about the question of setting up TeX font
support ... (thanks Michael).
