the csfonts archive also has files cmr10.vf and such so it's asking for 
troubles in a non-isolated installation (and also a reason why i can 
only test with a few files in a local tempdir)

well, normally one can just unzip a package in the tree ... and asking 
from a user to selectively copy from an archive is bad
