surely that wouldn't work, given that .o files aren't a linear mapping
of the input, whereas tex tokenisation is nearly linear.

(fwiw, i learned c by osmosis from decades of writing fortran and a fair
time writing pascal.  as a result, i once slipped up in a job interview
spouting pascal where i had been asked for c ;-)

in other messages, it's become plain that sensei has some experience of
_writing_ tex ... just wants to "look under the bonnet[*]" -- about
which tex documentation is rather short.

i'm not going to blame sensei for that, but i'm not sure what to
recommend.
