somehow I thought that

a) I've already tried that
b) that the default for expansion_factor is 1000 (= already set). I think that this is due to my understanding of the PDFTeX manual where it is stated that the "\efcode [...] defaults to 1000".

I've got it working now. Thanks!

I guess that the values for left_protruding, right_protruding and expansion_factor is 0..1000, right?
